This traditional Fedoskino box was painted by talented artist Vera Gudkova. It shows a scene from peasant life.
It's evening, and village girls and lads have gathered to have fun after a hard fieldwork. Two lads depicted in the background are the village musicians. One of them plays the accordion, while another one plays "balalayka". In the foreground several girls dressed in traditional Russian costumes sing and dance in a ring. They must be the bravest and the most beautiful girls in the village, because both lads and girls depicted in the background look at them with admiration. In the background the artist also depicts typical Russian peasant houses, and the beautiful sunset.
The composition is painted in oil paints. A wide range of bright colors is used to paint the characters, while the landscape is mostly painted in brown tones. Gold and aluminum powder is used to paint the girls' sarafans (summer dresses) and their shawls; and also to reproduce the sunset.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The sides of the box are decorated with elegant gold patterns. The box has a hinge from the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, the village and the year of 2002.
