Hunting

This smal, but deatiled box is a creation of Kholui artist, Svetlana Baburina. The work is called "Hunting" and shows a Russian Princes hunting accompanied by their suite.
The scene is painted in bright tempera paints and enlivened by lustrous gold paint that is used to enhance various details throughout the composition. The faces of all characters are expressively and distinctly painted. Their costumes reflect the fashion at the old times.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's exterior is decorated with gold ornament. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Kholui, and the title on the exterior side of the base.
