This attractive round-shaped box has been painted by Olga Kolygina from the village of Palekh. The work is called "Winter", and shows peasants feeding birds. The scene is drawn in brown, blue and red tones of tempera paints. Gold and aluminum are used to outline and limn extra details into the scene.
This well detailed box was painted by talented artist Marie Zhukova of Fedoskino. The composition is an interpretation of a canvas-on-oil painting called "Ivan Tsarevich Riding the Grey Wolf", painted in 1889 by Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov. It is currently hanging in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
