This interesting composition was painted by a well-known and established artist from Palekh, Anna Kamanina.
The work is called "Maslenitsa" or Pan-cake week, and the artist has painted some traditional folk customs connected with this spring festival. Here we can see burning of a woman of straw that embodies the winter, baking of sacrificial bread - pan cakes, dressing masquerades, various games, dancing, singing, boiling water for tea in Samovar and many others. The figures are painted in bright tempera paints and richly detailed with gold and aluminum paints! Fine work!
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is covered with black lacquer while the interior is covered with red lacquer. The box is not hinged and rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, title Maslenitsa and the year of 2016.
