This round box was painted by Kholui artist Anna Kosterina.
In late winter and spring male black grouses gather on the forest glades, where they compete for the females. The black grouses arrive from miles around to display communally and fight to establish possession of the most valuable territory. When grouse is at the lek, it become def and in this case might be a pushover for the hunters.
The scene is painted in dark and black paints over the red background. The edges of the lid are decorated with intricate ornamentation. Golden paint ornament wrap around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, titled and the village of Kholuy.
