A distinct blend of well detailed characters, spectacular color treatment and the precise highlights convey professional skill as well as divine creativity. The box shows several recognizable scenes from the Pushkin's tale of Tsar Saltan that describe Tsar Saltan's arrival at the wondrous island ruled by Prince Gvidon. Saltan has heard many fantastic stories about this mysterious place and decided to visit it. He doesn't know that Prince Gvidon is his son.
Here we can see Gvidon's island with all its wonders: the squirrel that all day long shells golden nuts, separating gold nutshells from emerald kernel of nuts, the thirty-three knights with their uncle old Chernomor, rising from the raging sea, and, the beautiful Princess Swan. On the lid of the box the artist depicts reunion of the family.
The artist's thinness of painting allows for spectacular detail and a poetic smoothness of all lines involved. Warm colors and brilliant pastels intensify the composition. The application of gold contouring grants this piece its intensely festive flare.
The composition on a lid and on the sides are framed with a nice gold foliage pattern.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is not hinged and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name, title and the village of Mstera on the buttom of the exterior of the box.
