Boating Down the River

Yevgenia (Zhenya) Shatokhina is the artist who painted this romantic scene. A loving couple is boating down the river, having a rendezvous. Gorgeous shades of green bring the well detailed landscape to life. The water of the river bubbles and swirls. This effect is achieved with the help of aluminum paint. Gold as well as aluminum is used to define and detail most areas on the box. By using these precious metal paints, the artist is able to extract even more vibrance from her palette.
The scene is framed with a nice, gold scrolling design while the box's sides are adorned a very beautiful floral pattern accented with aluminum.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2006.
