More info

Alexey Valyalin from the village of Fedoskino is the artist who painted this adorable dual-sided box. Since childhood, Valyalin has been fascinated with the sea. During his vacation at the Black Sea, he visited the Museum of Art in Feodosia (Crimea, Ukraine), and was greatly impressed by the paintings of the great Russian seascape painter, Ivan Aivazovsky. This occasion influenced his decision to become an artist and paint seascapes.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer mixed with the silver powder is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The scenes are framed with a gold line. The lid is hinged from the bottom of the compositions, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino on the both sides of the box.
