The Forest Spirit

Yevgenia Shatokhina of Palekh is the artist who painted this beautiful box. It shows the Forest Spirit sitting on the stump, and thinking about something. Various shades of green and brown help the artist to convey the feeling of a forest landscape. Most of the fine detail is added with the use of gold and aluminum paint. 
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The scene is framed with gold beads while the box's sides are decorated with intricate gold leafy patterns accented with aluminum. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2004.
