A distinct blend of well detailed characters, spectacular color treatment and the precise highlights convey professional skill as well as divine creativity. The box shows several recognizable scenes from the Pushkin's tale of Tsar Saltan that describe Tsar Saltan's arrival at the wondrous island ruled by Prince Gvidon. Saltan has heard many fantastic stories about this mysterious place and decided to visit it. He doesn't know that Prince Gvidon is his son. Denisenko's thinness of painting allows for spectacular detail and a poetic smoothness of all lines involved. Warm colors and brilliant pastels intensify the composition. The application of gold contouring grants this piece its intensely festive flare. Every character and piece of foliage shines with noble appeal.
The composition is framed with a nice gold foliage pattern completed with silver flowers. The box sides are decorated with a gold design but a little bigger in size.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
