Wanton Husband

The well-known Kholui artist Alexander Smirnov is the artist who painted the humorous scene on this box. It shows a wife who urges her husband to go home. She is very angry because she has caught her husband playing the accordion and flirting with pretty village girls.
Bright oranges, passionate reds, and various shades of green and brown make up the majority of the depicted scene. The details are extremely realistic. Gold paint enhances the radiant quality of the box.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with intricate gold patterns accented with aluminum framing the scene and wrapping around the side of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui, the year of 2003 and the title "Wanton Husband".
