Resurrection Cathedral of St.Petersburg

This beautiful box has been painted by the outstanding Fedoskino artist, Yuriy Mikhalyov who specializes in depicting architecture. The piece continues his series of works dedicated the picturesque views of St.-Petersburg.
Here the artist has chosen to depict the Cathedral of the Resurrection or more commonly known as the Our Savior on the Spilt Blood Cathedral. It was built on this specific location because it was where Alexander II life was taken in 1881. Located on the Griboyedov Canal its foundation was laid in 1883, and construction lasted twenty four years when it was consecrated in 1907. Today it has once again been given back to believers.
The entire scene is drawn over a large piece of mother-of-pearl that shines brightly with green, violet, and blue undertones. The scene is framed with a wide gold band. The wide gold band also wraps around the edges of the lid and the edges of the box's exterior bottom. The area on the lid that is free from painting and the box's exterior bottom are decorated with a nice tartan pattern drawn in gold, violet and light grey paints.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to complete the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Fedoskino.
