This box is a creation of Ulyana Danchenko whose recognizable style is very popular among amateurs of Russian lacquered miniature art. It shows a scene from Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Alice in Wonderland". Here we can see Alice, the White Rabbit, the King and the Queen playing croquet. They use flamingos as mallets and hedgehogs as balls.
The scene is painted in bright oil paints over silver metal powder that helps to fill the composition with light. Gold metal leaf inlay is used to detail the costumes of the King, the Queen and the White Rabbit, and also shines through the hedgehogs' needles.
The box's exterior imitates a stone color (silver veins are scattered against the light green background). The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer. On the box's exterior bottom Danchenko painted playing cards using oil paints, and also wrote her name, the title.
