This classic scene from "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" was painted by Fedoskino artist Yelena Gogina. It shows one of the three Wonders of the Gvidon's island: the squirrel that all day long cracks golden nuts with emeralds inside and sings songs. The squirrel is sitting inside the crystal house, on the large box full of emeralds gathered by servants from the ground. Tsar Saltan is surprised; he has never seen such a wonder.
Composition is odored with ornament, the box's sides are decorated with elegant gold ornamentation as well.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged at the left, and the box rests on four rounded legs.
The box is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
