Running upon the Waves

This enchanting box has been painted by established Palekh artists, a married couple, Sergey and Maria Gurilyev. The personality of these talented artists is highly evident within the imaginative detail and intense color combinations. 
Here the artists have chosen to depict a scene from the “Tale of Running Upon the Waves”.
The palette is filled with various shades of blue and green tempera paints. Gold and aluminum paint, applied with extreme precision, details almost every aspect of the composition. Like all of Gurilyevs' work, this piece is very well detailed and has its own unique mood.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's exterior is adorned with very intricate gold lacy patterns accented with aluminum. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the names of the artists, the year of 2004 and the village of Palekh.
